The term specimen comes from the Latin specere, meaning to look at or
to observe. In scientific and artistic fields, a specimen refers to a representative example
that showcases the characteristics of a larger whole. This concept was adopted by
typographers and printers as early as the 16th century when type foundries needed a way to
present their typefaces to customers.
